History

Established in 2009, Msheireb Properties’, formerly known as DOHALAND, aim is to create innovative, sustainable, eco-friendly and inspiring living space based on the Qatari heritage. “Msheireb Properties has a mission to change the way people think about urban living” (1) by improving the quality of life and encouraging social interactions. Msheireb Properties is building a community known as Msheireb Downtown Doha, that is unlike anything else in Qatar. It is located in central Doha, immediately adjacent to the Amiri Diwan, next to Souq Waqif.

Vision: To be the real estate development company that fundamentally changes the way we live and work in urban environments (2).

Mission: To profitably challenge preconceptions of conventional urban living through transformational thinking, and lowering the environmental impact of life in a 21st-century world. We aim to achieve this by encouraging an improvement in social dynamism, cultural sensitivity and quality of life (3).

Msheireb Downtown Doha is a QR 20 billion ($ 5.5 billion) project built by Msheireb Properties to redevelop, regenerate and conserve the historical downtown of Doha (4). It is “the world’s first sustainable downtown regeneration project, that will revive the old commercial district with a new architectural language that is modern, yet inspired by traditional Qatari heritage and architecture – its proportion, simplicity, space, light, layering, ornament and response to climate. Utilizing the latest in sustainable technologies, Msheireb will adhere to the highest standards in green building. The strategic objective of the Msheireb project is to reverse the pattern of development in Doha, which has tended towards isolated land use, reliance on car transportation and energy hungry structures” (5) . Msheireb Downtown Doha will be the new upcoming social hub in Doha, where friends and families can meet to live, work, shop and simply have an enjoyable time.

There are five main districts in Msheireb Downtown Doha;

• Diwan Amiri Quarter; which will serve as the administrative function for the Amiri Guard residences and the Qatar National Archives.

• Mixed-use and Residential Quarter; this section will serve as home to the residents of Msheireb Properties. It will also include office buildings, shopping and dining, schools and entertainment.

• Heritage Quarter; “The Heritage Quarter pays homage to local history and culture, with museums, mosques, restored landmark houses and a sense of life in the city in its earliest days”.

• Retail Quarter; this quarter will be the core shopping destination of the project and will cater to the needs of the residences and guests of Msheireb Properties. “From luxury boutiques, retail galleria to a major shopping promenade, the Retail Quarter will be the place to see and be seen in Doha.”

• Business Gateway; “The Business Gateway is strategically located at the primary transport hub in the project”. “The district will offer premier business amenities, supported by a mix of banking, personal and civic services, as well as a vibrant café and restaurant culture” (6) .

Under Msheireb Properties falls an Educational Centre that is a landmark destination to showcase Qatar’s past and “soaring ambitions for the future” (7). Msheireb Enrichment Centre (MEC) is located on Doha’s Corniche right by the Sheraton Hotel and it “outlines Qatar's glorious past, present and ambitious plans for the future while housing some of Qatar's historic artifacts, antique work tools and a treasure trove of information on Qatar's extraordinary growth” (7).
Through the use of distinct imagery and interactive mediums, the Msheireb Enrichment Centre highlights Qatar’s opulent heritage and unique architecture. It “provides the community an avenue to learn and enhance their experiences with thematic workshops and conferences, cultural events and gallery space with exhibits that focus on the Qatari heritage, along with a series of ongoing activities that will involve and engage the community actively” (7).
